Since being indepedent, Emily has embraced a honest, open sound which allows her to focus on unfiltered feelings and work at speed to capture moments at they happen. 1999 is complete proof of that, written in just 30 minutes.
“1999” was written at the end of a long day in the studio with my friend Jacob, which slowly turned from songwriting into a proper heart-to-heart. We found ourselves talking about the pressures that can come with adult life, trying to keep everything afloat in a fast-paced city like London, where everything can feel pretty relentless at times. Off the back of that conversation, we set a 30-minute timer and challenged ourselves to write whatever came out. The song arrived almost instinctively. It became a nostalgic, slightly tongue-in-cheek reflection on growing up. An ode to simpler times before responsibilities kicked in... full of honesty, and that quiet feeling of wishing things were just a bit easier." Emily Burns
On April 18th at 2pm, Emily will play her first live set since being independent at Banquet Records Kingston as part of Record Store Day.
Banquet Records owner Jon Tolley says "It's great that Emily can join us for our extensive Record Store Day sessions. It will be an amazing day and set to be our biggest yet. Check out the site for our full line up..."

BIO
Emily Burns is a London-based alt-pop artist known for sharp lyricism, diaristic storytelling and hook-driven production. Blending emotional honesty with confident, modern pop, she has built a global audience drawn to her clarity and bite.
Born in Scotland and raised in Rugby, Burns began writing songs young before moving to London at 18 to pursue music full-time. Early releases quickly gained traction, including the breakout single “Is It Just Me?” which has amassed over 150 million streams to date. Her debut album Die Happy further established her as a distinctive voice in UK pop, earning sustained streaming and online support and growing her audience to over 340,000 monthly Spotify listeners.
Burns has been playlisted on BBC Radio 1 and played global concerts and festivals alongside recording her work everywhere from Abbey Road Studios to her bedroom.
After years releasing music through record labels, including Island Records, Burns made the decision to step into 2026 as a fully independent artist. Her latest single, “Woodwork,” marks the beginning of this new chapter - a bold, self-defined era built on creative autonomy and direct connection with her audience.
Now operating independently, Emily Burns enters her next phase with renewed clarity and control, continuing to craft emotionally incisive pop while shaping her career entirely on her own terms.
